What is Cowboy Action Shooting?
For Wild West fanatics, Cowboy Action Shooting (also known as CAS) is a terrific way to live the adventure and romance of the late 1800’s. With period costumes and roleplaying games, nothing brings back the flavor of the Old West like an old-fashioned shoot-’em-up down home on the range. CAS began as a competitive shooting sport in California, back in the 1980’s. Participants engage in simulated combat in a closed arena that evokes the rough-and-tumble life of outlaws and good guys, with adventure for the whole family. Contestants dress in period costume, either completely authentic or in parody of old B-grade TV Westerns, and assume aliases in keeping with the spirit of the occasion. Each contestant enters the arena singly, with a variety of historically accurate weapons – these include a lever-action rifle, two single-action pistols, and a shotgun. While some competitions use only two weapons, four is fairly standard among most of the sanctioned CAS societies. The stage is set to resemble an Old West scenario, whether the action takes place in an old-time bank, a saloon, or out on the main street at high noon.

The contestant, clad in cowboy action shooting clothing, is timed via an electronic timer. His or her goal is to shoot a series of stationary or interactive targets in the correct succession; there may be a mission to accomplish, such as capturing a bag of gold from bandits in the bank or rescuing a lost child. Penalties are charged for every shot missed or safety regulation overlooked; scores are tallied at the end of each stage, and the contestant with the best time wins!
